Aikido is a defensive martial art that uses blending techniques to stop an attack. This unique art uses the principles of circular motion to blend with and unbalance an opponent rather than resorting to attack techniques. Created by Morihei Ueshiba, a Japanese descendant of samurai warriors who lived from 1883 to 1969, this art is based on the joint locks and throws of Jujitsu and the cutting motions of swordsmanship. Ueshiba Sensei, also known as O'Sensei, created a martial art that turned the life taking techniques of his time into an art that allows one to fully defend against an attacker without causing severe and possibly deadly results. Aikido draws heavily on philosophies and principles of cooperation and a desire to be at peace with mankind. Along with being a very powerful means of defense, Aikido leads a student into a way of life that fosters the ability to avoid or end conflict, whether against an opponent or against life's many obstacles. O'Sensei saw Aikido as a way to foster peace in a troubled world by developing in each person the philosophy of blending and avoiding aggression. |
